# 2025 Symposium - Chiller Talk ## Introduction : time: 2 minutes ![intro](./img/gif/intro.gif) - Who am I - Why I'm here - Brief interests ## Reason for talk : time 3 minutes ### Refrigerant Changes High odds we'll move to flammable refrigerant (10-15 year speculation) ### Get comfortable - Help get comfortable with the idea of using chillers in residential markets. - Draw similarities and differences between current equipment. ### Pros / Cons ## History : time 5 minutes It would be good to explore a little of the history of hydronic systems here maybe just touch on my companies history, idk ?? ## Concepts : time 9 minutes An introduction to some of the concepts and similarities. Start building a pros / cons list that we can go through at the end. ### What do we do? (audience participation) time: 1-2 minutes What's the primary objective of HVAC? - Provide healthy, safe, and comfortable environment. We move heat from one place to another, generally through refrigerant and air circulation... Water _IS_ a refrigerant. (could perhaps nerd out on specific heat, air = 0.24, water = 1.0, refrigerat=?? [high that's why we use it, gonna depend on the blend]) - Add specific-heat of water to the pro's list here, maybe also to cons when compared to refrigerant ?? ### House Complexity : time 1-2 minutes A home is made by harmony between many different mechanical and physics driven systems. - Shell / envelope - Ventilation / exhaust - Electrical - Plumbing / hot water - HVAC - and more... HVAC covers / is the realm of a lot of these systems. ### System Complexity : time 5 minutes - Show a well designed traditional system here (fresh-air, dehumidification, inverter, etc.). - we do not want to get rid of moving air, so these will still apply - talk about things like filtration, safety switches, controls / thermostats, inverter boards. - We have to design the distribution system. - Explore the idea of infrastructure vs. the plant here. - The infrastructure piece will likely have a longer life expectancy (pro) - More upfront cost design / materials (con) - glycol in cold climates - piping systems are fun / works of art (pro/con) - Inherent mis-trust for things we don't understand / are used to. (big, con?) ## Chiller / Heat Recovery Concepts : time 15 minutes **The meat and potatoes of the talk, most likely** - Show cool things that are _unlocked_ with using water. - ability to dump heat into other sources, such as pools - ability to incorporate different heat sources (dual fuel, pellets, wood, etc.) - Introduce the concept of heat-recovery and dhw generation. - unlocks dehumidification with a high COP - Puts more eggs in one basket (con) - can be stacked / redundant (pro) - Over sizing less of a problem (buffer tank concepts) ## Pro's and Cons : time 10 minutes Build and go over a pro's and cons list, this has hopefully been built up live with crowd engagement through the talk. ## Questions / Outro : 5 minutes
